Trends and scenes can sometimes be seen from miles off. But not many anticipated the stampede of synth-pop that arrived in 2008 and grew even more so this year. But the scent of a type of adrenaline-fulled grunge, a blend of garage rock, with the “hipster” tag is approaching. And without said tag, it’s the kind of music that still maintains its appeal. In 2010 you can expect to hear the name Male Bonding splashed all over the shop having just signed to Sub Pop, and expect their companions, Brighton’s La La Vasquez and Cold Pumas to also nab a bit of the limelight.
This isn’t chart-topping, this isn’t even real “music” to the old folks. But this is an energised, instrumental pulse. Guitars, guitars, guitars all clashing to create an almost otherworldly output, as if there are no guitars at all. The three-piece’s sound is given life by hard-hitting, relentless drums and this notion of repetition that makes all of it so intriguing and instant.
Call this city boy biased but the future should be well-prepared for what Brighton’s got in store.

I had a look at release schedules across the web and there’s actually a fair bit we should be preparing ourselves for. Life won’t just be revolving around ‘Merriweather Post Pavillion’ from January onwards. Here’s the first track from a February release from Black Lips, called ‘Starting Over’ and featuring on the brilliantly titled ‘200 Million Thousand’. These guys have been making more of a name for themselves through live performances most recently; their Great Escape performance last May, from what I heard of it, made me sob at the fact that I wasn’t 18 yet. This in itself is a lovely little nostalgic-sounding alt/grunge anthem to keep any fierce, forcing tears away for a while. It’s charming, it’s probably quite drunken, it’s lovely.
INTRODUCING: Triple School words: Jamie Milton found by: Phil Coales
Some say you should let the music you listen to play some sort of film soundtrack in your life. The people that encourage this interpretation of what music is and what it should do and all that lark, are probably slightly odd but there have been times where most of us could admit to looking up at the blue skies and seeing whatever’s in your ears as “fitting”, in a similar vein to the way that ‘Just Like Honey’ is perfect for Lost In Translation. So let’s play the guess what movie Triple School would be good for? Well, I’m not sure this film exists yet but it involves violence, hipsters, drugs and Sting being incarcerated on a metal board of spikes. Picture it. Ok don’t. But hopefully this’ll give you a brief and perhaps offputting take on how Triple School portray themselves musically. But the movie description above reeks of attitude, and this lot are made of it.
Funny thing is they could be pigeonholed into a grungey, DiY scene that’s driving music lovers among us mental due to its sheer endless amounts of imagination and balls that not one of us can even keep up with. We’re talking your White Denims, your No Agess, your Times New Vikings. It’s a musical “scene” that’s buckling down a whole host of American acts. Triple School however come from the same area as Glasvegas and Broken Records – two bands that haven’t the time of day for full-on fun, but with the right ideas. This Glasgow twosome are every bit as entertaining, enticing as the American lot and they’ve got just as much going for them as their Scottish buddies. ‘Consentrated Bones’ is a surefire example of their brief but budding sound, lasting only a thin more than 1 and a half minutes but with enough vigor and vitality to remain noteworthy. The effect they’ll have on is will be instantaneous, from the second the kick enters in rhythm with the chanted vocals and from then on, the grunge commences.
What’s evident in the equally compelling ‘Biggie on the Thorax’ and ‘Wonderful Friend’ is that they’ve room to breathe. Their myspace genre is “children” which finds itself somewhat fitting for a band that sound like they’re having an awful lot of fun. But this punk soundscape has room to turn and evolve into something more troublesome. A two-piece can sometimes find themselves pushed to find new ideas, especially if they come under the guitar-plus-drums formation, but here’s to a bucketful of new ideas coming our way…Hell, you might even have a range of movie soundtracks to choose from in the near future! –TRIPLE SCHOOL MYSPACE– PLAY: Triple School – Consentrated Bones VIDEO:Triple School @ Nice n Sleazies
