MFM Playlist: (2nd November)

The writers at MFM are positively up to their necks in new music at the moment, especially considering we’re mere weeks away from listing our top tips for the new decade. So it seemed worthy of compressing some of the songs we’ve been playing into one, succinct blog post. For your reading pleasure, here are some of the best new bands and some of the most exciting songs from more established acts.

The Dead Weather – I Cut Like A Buffalo

When it first emerged that Jack White and The Kills’ Alison Mosshart were to form a band of their own, the tastebuds went into meltdown and expectation was at a dangerous level. The final product, The Dead Weather’s debut ‘Horehound’ was mildly underwhelming for some but ‘I Cut Like A Buffalo’ is reason enough for fans to keep faith in this group who look like they’re in it for the long run. Jack White is far from taciturn on both drums and vocals as the song calls upon The Raconteurs more than any other previous project of the band’s members. A jazz-infused, obnoxious classic – totally unpredictable and infectious.

His Clancyness – Ottawa Backfired Soon

Straight to the lazy band comparisons: His Clancyness is a beautiful blend of Beach House and Band Of Horses, gently tickling you with summer vibes whilst His Clancyness’s vocals stand tall at the top of the mix. ‘Ottawa Backfired Soon’ is a tame, giving number that breathes luscious guitar rhythms and spacious atmosphere all over your body. Lost Knives – Static

Its Getting Boring By The Sea recently shared a stack of new Lost Knives’ tracks after the Manchester four-piece triumphed at the showcase festivals of October, In the City and Swn. ‘Static’ is another pulsing form of escape, brushing against stadium-worthy anthemic qualities but keeping to the signature pit of darkness that looms within each and every song this band’s recorded to date. Wild Nothing – Summer Holiday

Jack Taturn, music lover, I don’t believe you’ve met. Wild Nothing is a solo-band project that lifted into the hype when a cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Cloudbusting’ pricked a few ears. ‘Summer Holiday’ is more than just chiming guitars and rapid drum patterns – it’s a wholly uplifting package that never settles into mediocrity and adds structural and mood variety when you least expect. Wild Palms – Over Time

Keepin’ it wild. Coming to a 6music show near you, Wild Palms produce far-from-understated pop songs located in the gloomiest corner of the Earth. This boasts more attitude than almost every new band on the planet, musically citing Faris Rotter’s commanding vocals but offering something more streamlined and dangerous. ‘Over Time’ has every right to plummet Wild Palms into the heady skies of popularity.
