5 Quick Clicks – 07/07/09

The rain just threw a tantrum, Michael Jackson’s “daughter” put a lump in my throat and it’s six days until I head off into the unknown (Spain’s Benicassim festival). It’s also been a while since I’ve done this: What can I say? I’ve had much more important things to do. Such as reading Bill Bryson, eating corn on the cob and exchanging my pounds into euros. I’ve missed the internet, the internet’s missed me. But it’s stayed afloat somehow and here’s a few interesting click click clicks.

- Instead of bragging about hearing it, DiS has actually told us what Wild Beasts’ ‘Two Dancers’ sounds like.   (drownedinsound)

- This guy doesn’t have a point. (Everett True)

- Pandora is still alive. But us UK users still can’t have it. (TBI)

- Adam Ficek has his say on the future of indie as a genre (Gigwise)

- A guide to this year’s best remixes so far (2STEPS)

I live in a seaside city. Sure, we have pebbles for sand, seaweed for Mediterranean temperatures, but still, to not go in the sea for two years where you have such liberty to do so is madness. Well today I broke the burden, in the process gaining the worst sunburn of my life (forgot to factor 20 the ankles!). I had the iPod on whilst relaxing and a few songs seems to truly suit the summer scene. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and ‘The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack’ (Liars) were perfect on repeat. I didn’t miss being stuck indoors at all.

Some of the finer internet produces for today:

- Is Jens Lekman the first famous person to contract swine flu? What’s Chris Brown up to these days?  (Pitchfork)

- Johnny Foreigner are for real, they’re back and they’re touring. (DIY)

- They’re also giving away their new single for free, with 2 other songs (JoFo)

- David Renshaw interviews the outspoken Beth Ditto (It’sGettingBoringByTheSea)
[mp3: Dimestore Diamond // alt]

- Everybody likes a backstage photo: Here’s tons of them at Glasto (NME)

We didn’t go to Glastonbury Festival this year. What we learnt from watching some dodgy BBC coverage (one minute big act, next minute some nobody on the acoustic stage), was that we really should have fucking gone. Still, at least BBC iPlayer kept us occupied this weekend with well updated videos of the performances on the big fat stages. In a 5 clicks Glasto special, here’s our pick of the performances.
(We’re real sorry to any of our visitors outside of England, because you probably won’t be able to view these. Track ‘em down on youtube, they’re worth it. In the mean time, drownedinsound’s first listen of the new Beastie Boys record is well worth a lengthy read. )

- Blur, the obvious choice, the perfect headliners, the perfect comeback.

- Franz Ferdinand, a raucous frenzy of a set, down and dirty.

- Friendly Fires, camp dancing and an overall embracing of the sunshine.

- Dizzee Rascal, up for PM, providing a surreal singalong of ‘Bonkers’.

- Lady GaGa, best popstar of the year, bar-none and proving it.

Shamefully, the only music I’ve listened to today has been the Sims 3 soundtrack. Unfortunately the soundtrack was the only thing that worked smoothly on that game – I discovered that I’m in deep need of a more capable computer. A summer cold has also arrived which seems a little unfair. Despite this, I’ve spent most of my day outdoors and so have had to rush this feature a little today. But in case you’ve had extra stuff to do as well, here’s a quick summary of some stuff to flick through:
—- We’re to get a taste of the new Samba-style Friendly Fires nice and early —- (NME)

—- We’ve the final verdict on how wet those lucky Glastonbury-goers will get —- (Gigwise)

—- Some light is finally shed on the new Battles record —- (Pitchfork)

—- A comprehensive top 10 of the worst musicians-cum-actors —- (The Independent)

—- Doing things in quarters: FACT mag’s top 20 albums of April>June —- (FACT)

So, MFM has undergone surgery for about the third time this year…This time round, it was an emergency operation. About this time last night everything…went to shit. The layout, the posts, all scattered. It was a webmaker’s nightmare. But we’ve given it a quick re-design, a few tweaks still required, but we think it looks more nifty and readable. ‘User-friendly’, that’s the word. Here’s some shiz you should have sizzled over the last 24 hours:

—- NME Editor, Conor McNicholas, becomes ex-NME editor. A new phase for the teen-aimed music mag? —-(Twitter)

—-Not definite, but this incredible image could grace the front of the new Flaming Lips album —-(Pitchfork)

—-This is what the Pull Tiger Tail debut looks like in a nifty promo sleeve —-(Popjustice)

—-We’re listening to a lot of The Smiths – you should too. Even those pesky buggers at Glastonbury don’t get this —-(Spotify)

—-50 Cent declares his new record ‘Perfect’. Nothing like a bit of publicity… —-(Gigwise)

From today, MFM is rejoicing the immediacy of the internet and is forwarding you the best five things we’ve found on there today. We’ll cover new music, news and oddities.

—- In the battle between the female solo artists, quickly compare Florence Welch’s giant new tour dates with Little Boots’ more low-key ones —-

—- Crystal Fighters, so hot right now, are the Guardian’s 572nd new band of the day —-

—- Michael Eavis is hinting at a surprise Muse visit to Glastonbury, we’ve heard it’s Klaxons —-
