Volcano Choir: Island, IS
NEW MUSIC: The Volcano Choir – Island, IS
words: Jamie Milton

I for one, hadn’t heard of Collections of Colonies of Bees until this morning. But as they’re Bon Iver’s favourite band, it’s time to inquire. Firstly, however, the priority lies with The Volcano Choir, a side-project between Justin Vernon and said favourite band which emerged far before ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ found its audience.
Vernon is emerging now as something of a versatile performer. No longer is he just found strumming by the campfire, producing floods of tears that melt the snow beneath him. In fact, ‘Island, IS’ sounds more like a Field side-project than a Bon Iver one. Vernon’s voice is nearly indecipherable but it doesn’t sound uncommon amongst the building loops of guitar jolts, jolts not far from something Maps and Atlases might come up with in a few years time. Apparently the whole record is made up of these tiny nuts and bolts, merging themselves together, hopefully, to form something as well-organised and easy on the ear as this.
