Twin Atlantic: Lightspeed
TRACK REVIEW: Twin Atlantic – Lightspeed
Words: Gareth O’Malley

Nothing like checking on the site or MySpace of a band you haven’t been keeping tabs on and finding out that something big is happening. This happened to me last night as I was wondering ‘What the fuck have Twin Atlantic been up to in the last while?’ I soon found out; The album is done. It’s called ‘Vivarium’ and is out on September 14th (same day as a certain other album that is definitely not Muse’s new record, ‘The Resistance’…). Consider me seriously excited, as the band’s output thus far has been, quite frankly, stellar. Coming off as a Biffy Clyro who lean more towards power-pop than anything else (The Biff did this themselves on ‘Puzzle’, although it retained a fraction of the quirkness that the band had become known for), Twin Atlantic are yet another amazing Scottish band. Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, Broken Records, We Were Promised Jetpacks, There Will Be Fireworks… fuck, the rest of the U.K. needs to catch up! ‘Lightspeed’, ‘Vivarium’’s opening track, is a fantastic song, driven by a powerful bass line and inspired drumming. Sam McTrusty’s vocals may be seen as an acquired taste, but the frontman turns in a great performance on this track. If ‘Lightspeed’ and the demo of ‘Caribbean War Syndrome’ that is currently streaming on the band’s MySpace page, along with re-recorded versions of ‘What Is Light? Where Is Laughter?’ and ‘Audience And Audio’, are anything to go by, ‘Vivarium’ is going to be amazing. The release of brand new song ‘You’re Turning Into John Wayne’ (how about that song title!?) precedes the release of the debut. Look out for these guys, folks. If there is any justice left in the world, they will be huge.

‘Vivarium’ is released on Monday September 14th via Red Bull Records. The tracklisting has not yet been announced, although the band have said that the tracks due to make up the album are the following:
- ‘Audience And Audio’
- ‘What Is Light? Where Is Laughter?’
And six new ones
- ‘Lightspeed’
- ‘Caribbean War Syndrome’
- ‘Better Weather’
- ‘Old Grey Face’
- ‘You’re Turning Into John Wayne’
- Human After All’ (Daft Punk cover, anyone?)
The artwork is on the right. I think the word you’re looking for is ‘wow’.

[...] I sometimes wonder if the Glaswegian four-piece settled on their name for that very reason. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Scottish music is thriving, and we have seen bands produce great album after great [...]
