2009 so far…The musician’s views
2009: In the words of the musicians
editorial: Jamie Milton

2009 has been…
Irritating: The ‘album of the year so far’ talk reached new levels within the first couple of weeks, with ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’, Animal Collective’s “breakthrough” record, circulating talk about the competition being over in a flash. What competition? Surely this is all very subjective, there is no definitive. Below is the thoughts of some exciting, new and upcoming musicians that we contacted. Their idea on the best music of 2009 so far is completely personal. They don’t project their opinions, expecting that everyone else should agree. Nor does this blog, in fact. But we must be careful to ensure that this state of mind doesn’t creep over once more. Because it has to some extent, at least personally for me, nearly ruined a few special releases.
Here’s some talented people’s favourites:

Gemma - KASMS
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart – S/T
“I really loved The Pains of being pure at heart album released in Feb and eagerly awaiting the Spin Spin the Dogs album ‘Leave me in Leicester’ I’ve had a sneaky listen and its wicked
I haven’t really heard a lot of albums from 2009 to be honest, I’ve heard a lot of singles and EPs. The Not Cool ‘brattwell sessions’ demo is amazing ! I do sneak around listening to some of the awesome stuff Rory records. Another one i heard recently was ‘cold pumas’. love them. my friends band ‘Plug’ better put out their album soon too, it will be a cracker.”

Adam – Kill it Kid
Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career
“I recently woke up one morning and listened to an artist called Camera Obscura who’s put out an album titled “My Maudlin Career”. If your want some morning music to put you in a good place for the rest of the day this is it! I enjoyed the country tinge applicable to most tracks. It really reminds me of the first time i heard “Z” by My Morning Jacket, the arrangements are sublime. The vocal is a cross between Leslie Feist of Canadian act “Feist” and (probably because of the reverb levels) Jim James – My Morning Jacket. The production on this album has a seventies vibe with a prominent strings section creating easy on the ear mellow pop. I would guess that after a summer of festivals these guys an girls will make it big!”

Sam – The Rosie Taylor Project
Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson- S/T
“Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson maybe one of the least catchy names anyone has ever performed under but his hollerin’ and howling about life on the streets more than makes up for it. Recorded with Grizzly Bear and TV On The Radio and better than both of them.”

Katie – Sky Larkin
Invisible – S/T
“They get a lot of lazy comparisons to TVOTR (which they dealt with more eloquently on their myspace blog than I ever could). They also have a huuuuge live sound. yum!”
