The Cribs: We Were Aborted
TRACK REVIEW: The Cribs – We Were Aborted
words: Jamie Milton

Johnny Marr isn’t just some musical pin-up. Back in 2007, he did an awful lot of good for Modest Mouse, adding more punch and cohesiveness to their sound. His unexpected arrival to the Cribs will doubtless give the Wakefield lads more ambition and a bigger palette of ideas to choose from. ‘We Were Aborted’ provides evidence for the same old being mixed with the new. ‘Same old’ being the anthemic, raucous catchiness to their songs, ‘new’ being a sense of growth, a far grander sound than you could have imagined when their self-titled debut arrived only five years back.
It might just be the presence and assistance of Marr that guides this track past any hurdles that might’ve absorbed it into mediocrity; every one of the Jarman brothers’ records to date has had the odd grey blur with less appealing traits. Instead, this is very much a typical Cribs anthem, only one to be sung louder and prouder than ever before. Suddenly, a reckless live act with a host of good tunes to pack the punch, might end up becoming one of the most important indie bands for a very, very long time.

[...] Ex-Smiths, Ex-The The, Ex-Talking Heads, Ex-Modest Mouse REAL guitar hero Johnny Marr goes some way to rescuing The Cribs from another shouty-northern-bloke anthem. It’s quite good and it’s here. [...]
