Arctic Monkeys: Crying Lightning
TRACK REVIEW: Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning
words: Jamie Milton

Let’s observe for a second, exactly how far Arctic Monkeys have come from their days of being adidas-sporting, local lads from Sheffield. Now, laden with beards and supermodel girlfriends, they’re at the liberty of being able to hire the frontman of one of the biggest rock bands of the last two decades to produce their third album, an album certain to make teenage girls weak at the knees, teenage boys triumphantly singing along. This is quite a step from “classic reeboks”…
Lyrically as well, Alex Turner doesn’t feel the need to relate to the masses with endless contextual references and verses about kebabs. He’s all the more for it, a better vocalist in the process, taking a more powerful, roughed-up stance than ever before. ‘Crying Lightning’ delves into the darker elements of ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’, and paints them a shade darker. A implanting chorus sticks right to the centre of your head, but it requires a few more listens to gather in the rest of the song. Nevertheless, Turner and co. are determined on making even more of an impact than before with more urge to turn heads than previous. It shows.
