Track: Florence and the Machine – Cosmic Love
TRACK REVIEW: Florence and The Machine – Cosmic Love
words: Jamie Milton

At least a pinch of electronic salt is required when it comes to writing catchy pop hooks these days. Congratulations to those who set the trend, long live the synth. But fortunately, any subtle inclusion of such instrument is completely overshadowed by what seems to be a coherent theme emerging from Florence Welch’s output – at one with nature, living up to the Kate Bush comparisons with beautifully complex harp patterns and authentic, pounded drums.
“I’m always in this twilight, in the shadow of your heart” she whimpers, surrounded by one of the most simple, most “why didn’t I think of that?!” chord patterns for some time. It almost seems that within each song unveiled, Welch is maturing and evolving into an individual talent, one that needn’t have to worry about criticisms or claims, one that can already rest happy with her achievements. ‘Lungs’ however, almost definitely looks set to be the biggest achievement that any of 2009’s hotly-tipped pack will produce.
