NEW MUSIC: Real Estate

Now, I don’t want to be one to jump on the anti-NME bandwagon because some music reviews are spot on and their new bands features are first class. But the music snob in me shivered with anger this week when the words “Fleet Foxes – this year’s MGMT!” were slabbed in capitals onto the front cover. It’d be pretty hypocritical of me to call Real Estate the new Fleet Foxes but in ‘Beach Comber’, they give you that same, fuzzy, sun-kissed feeling all over again.
That track features on the ‘Atlantic City Expressway’ tour EP, which indicates that they’ve got plenty more in them. Keeping busy, their self-titled debut 7″ came out this February with Underwater Peoples and they were one of the highlights of this year’s SXSW. More indication of their sound comes from the fact that they’re partly made up of Matt Mondanile who goes under the alias of Ducktails. This project is pretty similar sound-wise. Most interestingly, Real Estate are one of the first bands who could be pigeon-holed into the ‘lo-fi’ category, whilst also having the ability to write some really intelligent pop songs. Refreshingly, they abolish this idea that lo-fi recording = crap songwriting.
Excellent – let this latest EP ease you into a bright, less breezy May and get the Underwater Peoples compilation, which features the track ‘Snow’.
