TRACK REVIEW: The Gossip – Heavy Cross

Bordering on ‘one hit wonder’ they may be (some might claim), but the Gossip are nowhere near forgotten. It seems like only a short time ago that Beth Ditto controversially appeared nude on the front of NME, shortly after ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’ (or at least the Soulwax remix of it) became the anthem of 2007.

Anthemic seems to be a trend Ditto and co. are sticking to. Behind fashion tips and a knack for not being able to keep her mouth shut, Beth Ditto possesses one of the most important voices in music today. Powerful and controlling, it retains a firm grip on ‘Heavy Cross’, a funk-adoring ‘Standing In The Way…’ v.2.0. She carries with her a similar tempo and groove to the breakthrough single, with another chorus capable of taking you off your feet. It’s plain to see that this big single, the one that consolidates The Gossip’s image as an inventive pop band, has been mapped out time and time again. Their finished product is nothing short of perfect in terms of what they want to achieve in what could be the biggest year of their lives.
